Bold design, remarkable craftsmanship and a story woven by hand.
The GalaBags story began in Java in 1986, when Sulastri and Soimun began creating their distinctive handwoven bags for local markets. After a devastating fire in 2009, their daughter helped rebuild the family business, preserving the traditional craft and creating new opportunities throughout their village.
In 2020, Gaz and Lara discovered these remarkable bags and began with an opening collection of just 100. That discovery grew into an exclusive partnership, with GalaBags becoming the sole Australian distributor working directly with the original family and village artisans.
Today, GalaBags brings original Australian designs together with traditional handwoven craftsmanship, supporting the families and village behind every weave.

Where Our Story Began
Meet Gaz on his first visit to the village in Java where GalaBags are brought to life. Discover the people behind the weave and the care, patience and skill behind every bag.
Meet the people behind the weave and watch the care, patience and skill that go into making each bag by hand. For us, this visit was about more than seeing the process—it was about meeting the families whose craftsmanship is at the heart of GalaBags.
From our Australian designs to their hands, every GalaBag carries a story of creativity, connection and pride.
Watch our first village visit and discover the people behind your GalaBag.
Return to the village twelve months later and see how skilled work is helping the community grow.
When we returned to the village in February 2026, twelve months after our first visit, the difference reached far beyond the bags. This is the story of a village growing together through skilled, valued work.
By then, GalaBags had helped remove more than 10 tonnes of discarded plastic from beaches—representing over one million drink bottles. Just as meaningful was the change taking place in the lives of the people behind the weave.
Women who had previously earned around $5 a day working in rice paddies were now crafting bags within their own village, close to their families and children. Traditional skills were being shared, valued and passed on.
The village sets its own rates of pay at a level that rewards exceptional craftsmanship and attracts skilled makers. With full-time production exclusively for GalaBags Australia, more local people were joining the team—bringing greater income, opportunity and confidence in the future.
Watch the Grande Truffle GalaBag take on an extraordinary 132.5 kg filmed load test.
The genuine GalaBag strength test — you have to see it to believe it. Watch the Grande Truffle put to the test in a filmed load test.
We took our Australian-designed Grande Truffle GalaBag to the gym and progressively loaded it with weights to discover just how strong it really is.
This GalaBag was handcrafted using our premium Gala-grade recycled plastic and our exclusive handle reinforcement system, featuring a 1.5 mm reinforcement line woven through the handles.
The result? An incredible 132.5 kilograms.
At 132.5 kg, the internal reinforcement line finally gave way—but remarkably, the handwoven handles themselves still didn’t break. They stretched under the enormous load and continued to hold together.
See the construction details that separate a genuine GalaBag from ordinary woven bags.
Similar appearance. Very different construction. See why the materials, weave and handles make a genuine GalaBag different.
In this video, Gaz examines a selection of other woven bags, showing brittle plastic, loose weaving, fraying packing-tape material and handles that have broken, unravelled or been tied onto the sides.
Then we take a closer look at a genuine GalaBag—and the details that make the difference.
Our Gala-grade plastic, handles reinforced with 1.5 mm plastic line, and the skill of our village crafters all contribute to the strength and finish we stand behind.
These examples show why it pays to look closely at the materials, the weave and how the handles are attached. Not every woven bag is a GalaBag.
